Mileage: 77
Time: 6 hrs
Average: 12.4
Weather: Cooler than yesterday! Mid 80s.
Today was a toned down day; a "rest" by only riding 77 miles. But it was a lovely day, and we had a nice long evening at the campground.
Started off toned down, by leaving Lake Leamon campground in Wallace, NC, at 7:05 AM. Most of that was Emily's fault, for not being ready.
This morning there was a bird trying to make a nest in a few different pairs of David's pants.
Very nice weather on the ride in the morning. Cool and breezy. Took Rt. 41 the whole way down to our next campsite. Rt. 41 must be the pig road. We saw at least 15 - 20 double deck tractor trailers pulling piggies to market. And oh- did they smell like a pig pen!
We have also seen many many logging trucks within the past couple days. The wood smells good, thankfully.
Some parts of the road were very bumpy. You can always tell how far Darrell is behind you because of the loose change he carries!
No second breakfast today. Mother Hen got left earlier than usual this morning, and caught up with her brood for an early lunch in at Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church. Grandma Rose's homemade egg salad made up for the missed breakfast! Got rained on before lunch. Emily really enjoys riding in the rain. It is such a nice break from the heat. Our lunch was in a nice and shady spot.
While eating lunch, a police officer pulled a car over right in front of the church. A couple minutes later, this truck towing a trailer went by right down Main Street in town. The trailer was basically holding a portable (illegal) office on the back. There were a couple guys hanging out on the furniture back there. Notably, one guy was lounging on a swivel chair sitting at a desk. As they passed the police officer, we could see the guys' heads turn, looking at him. Good thing for them, he was preoccupied with the other car.
Road kill count was 18 today. Not too shabby for the animals.
Florida license plate count jumped from 6 overall to 17 overall today. Oh boy oh boy oh boy!
Mother Hen drove ahead a couple miles and then stopped. The bikers caught up, and Grandma Rose and Ellie hopped out to take some miles of nice roads. Gray Fox finally gets to come down off the bike rack! Thankfully for Grandma, it wasn't too hot today. Ellie did very well, not swerving and only taking 1 drink break!
Quote of the day: "I'm getting back in the air conditioning, you guys can keep riding!" ~Ellie while handing off her bike to Papa Dave and jumping back into the RV.
After they finished riding, we made a switcheroo, and Ladina and Jenna got to ride for 4 miles before the thunderstorm hit. The riders could see the storm clouds advancing, and pulled into a Food Lion parking lot just as sheets of rain started blowing toward them. Mom quick made it in the RV, while Grandma and Ellie ran into the grocery store. Everyone else got drenched. But once again, it was nice to cool off. The storm must have been moving very fast, because it was short-lived. We were on the road again within 15 minutes.
Didn't have far from there until our Sleepy Bear's campground in Lumberton, NC. Jenna rode the rest of the way to the campground. Ladina stopped riding and went in the grocery to help Grandma Rose and Ellie shop for supplies and food.
The Fab Four plus Jenna and her Pink Panther continued on to the campground after having to ask directions. Our silly GPSes were trying to take us on Rt. 95, a highway no bikes are allowed on.
Bikers got to the campground around 3:30, shortly after the ladies, and helped to set up.
A delicious much looked forward to supper of Mac&cheese and hotdogs was greatly enjoyed.
Less miles today hopefully will equal more energy for tomorrow!
Oh my goodness, David! (Picture "all washed up" by the pool) Where is your sunscreen?!?
ReplyDeleteGlad you all had a "quieter" day! We are praying for you! ~all the A's
Can't wait to be part of the fun!
ReplyDeleteSee ya'all tomorrow:)
When you say "You can tell how far behind Darrell is by the change in his pocket" there is a general indication he is always behind? Is this surprising to anyone. Darrell must be using this ride as his training ride.
