June 17 ~ Day 12 ~ Crossing into Florida!

Stats:
Mileage: 98
Average: 13.4
Time: 7 hours 20 minutes
Weather: Foggy in the morning - Shady and low 80s midmorning - low 90s afternoon - not windy

The Spectacular Six left our Knox motel at 6:30 AM this morning. We broke out the long johns for breakfast. Mmmm mhm!

This morning everyone couldn't stop talking about those loud trains that went through town in he middle of the night. Darrell and David didn't wake up. They must have been dead or something. grandma Rose said it seemed like the train was coming right through the motel.

This morning, Grandma Rose told Emily and David to put their heads together so she could take a picture of them. They took it quite literally.

This morning there was heavy heavy fog. It was not so comfortable riding, being afraid cars wouldn't see us. But we had our blinkers on. The best part about the fog was that it kept things cool until our breakfast 25 miles later. 66 degrees!

Before Mother Hen left, Ladina got to talk a little bit to the lady who ran the Knox Motel. She was saying how she goes to prison every Tuesday to hand out Bibles and tracks and conduct Bible lessons. She has been doing it for a very long time. She is the only outsider the prison allows into the inner prison. She was such an interesting lady!

The bikers' breakfast was eaten in Folkston, Georgia. The omelets some of us ordered were huge!

There were like 7 routes going through Folkston. Most of them were combined on the main road. At one point, we saw the seven different route signs all together pointing the same direction! Here we could "only" get a picture of 5 of them together!

Sometime between breakfast and lunch (our hours all run together!), we saw a heron or fishing bird of some sort! It flew right in front of us! It was pretty big. It flew faster than we were riding.

We took Rt. 121 out of Folkston, and that road was nothing but trash trucks. We passed the landfill they must have been taking the stuff to. Doug and Papa Dave think the trash smells worse, but Emily prefers the trash smell over the pig smell!

The only real hard wind we had today was when a big truck would pass us!

Rt 121 also must be a logging road, because there were many large fields of trees that must have been replanted. They were all standing in nice rows. That road was very nice and smooth, and all the trees gave us shade!

We saw 37 Florida license plates overall before we hit the Florida state line.

ONLY 11 road kill were spotted today! We weren't on very busy roads, and it was a bit more swampy. Doug says the animals are just faster down here in Florida. Funny, we were only in Florida for the last 30 miles of our ride today.

On our ride today, Papa Dave was asked how he got started on biking. He told us all the story about how he had tried racquetball first to his activity. Then when that wasn't active enough for him, he started biking.
Quote of the Day: "I'm glad racquetball didn't work out for you." ~David, to Papa Dave

Our ride today put us over 1000 miles for the trip so far! Now we have 200 more miles until Sarasota! WHOOP WHOOP! (that is Emily's kind of hollering)

On our iPhones' maps app, it shows where you are by the blue dot. Of course we had to go to Florida the long way! We stayed down through Georgia for that whole little peninsula of GA.

Papa Dave announced that when there was 1 mile left to go to the Florida state line, we would all race. On a previous rest stop, Jenna had joined us, and she was ready to race too! When everyone took off, Emily and Jenna stayed behind, plugging along at 16-17 mph, while everyone else zoomed ahead, going at least 22-23! Darrell took the lead, and pulled the whole way. At the very end, Doug sprinted past him to win it. He says he thought about feeling bad for doing that since Darrell was in the lead the whole way, but reasoned it was a Rookie Mistake to be doing all that work out front!

Grandma Rose, Ladina, and Ellie met us at the line with Orange Juice! There was no official welcome center with orange juice, so we had to improvise! :)

(Ellie is feeling much better today)

winning the race!

Stopped for our nice long lunch break at a ballpark in Macclenny, FL.

The three men took naps

After lunch, we had about 30 more miles to go to get to our KOA Kampground in Starke, FL. Dad pulled a lot of the way, since we headed slightly east for some time, and had the wind against us. This time it was not a Rookie Mistake, it was greatly appreciated! Emily says Dad always ends up in the lead when the wind is blowing!

Emily's left pedal started clicking, so when the bikers got to the campground - er - Kampground, Papa Dave rode to a Walmart in town to buy her a new set of pedals. Hopefully we can fix her old ones when we get back home.

The Kampground has big letters on the driveways, saying "7 1/2 MILES PER HOUR!" and, "ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT SPEEDBUMPS!" That is one speed limit we did break on our bikes.

Went swimming again, of course, in a very nice pool. Had a crockpot lasagna supper from Costco. YUM

This Kampground did not have too many ants and gnats! What a nice surprise! They do not allow tenting as a Starke ordinance (crazy story behind that), so the two couples are sharing a mini cabin (with air conditioning).

Looking forward to a shorter day tomorrow!
