Day 10 ~ Father's Day

Stats:
Mileage: 84
Average: 14.3
Time: 5 hours 50 minutes
Weather: Our first tailwind since the first couple days of our ride! High around 90, lots of sweat, lots of hydrating! Starting early in this beautiful morning helped keep most of the ride a cool one.

We have 823 miles so far on our trip! Sarasota, here we come!

The Fab Five left Jonnie and Louella's house around 6:30 AM. The weather this morning could not have been more ideal for a bike ride. High 70s, no wind, and lots of shade on the country roads. We were trucking along at 15 or 16 mph most of the time. It was more hilly than we were used to today!

This morning Jenna got to milk the cow again before Mother Hen left. This time we got pictures!

Quote of the Day: "I just did some magic in Louella's kitchen!" ~ Grandma Rose, about making more Amish Peanut Butter

The riders were more talkative today than usual, probably because we had another person, Uncle Doug, to exchange stories with. It was a wonderful ride the whole day through. We were fortunate with overall great roads.

Dead armadillo. We put him on the road so we could count him as a roadkill. He was hollow inside. Doug's prediction (many armadillo roadkill as we go further south) is coming true before his eyes!

42 road kill today. That's 268 overall.

We hit the Georgia state line at around mile 40.

Then we stopped at the Welcome Center a half mile later, but it is closed on Sundays and Mondays. But we found something interesting there.

Darrell has been searching for motorized transportation - poor choice Darrell!
Papa Dave figured they just took it as far as they could go and had to stop where there's no snow.
David - where's your helmet!? It's not safe snowmobiling without a helmet!

Shifty Dick Dastardly must have been here - it's chained to a post!

Bikers had to ride a long time before breakfast; 53 miles! Ended up eating our brunch at R&D's in Sylvania, Georgia around 11:30. There was a huge Father's Day crowd! No one rode in on snowmobiles though. Ladies in the RV joined us for brunch, then went straight to the campground from there. They wouldn't have to feed the bicyclers lunch anytime soon. Made sure they had snacks for the road though!

Another close day to making our goal- 60 miles by noon. Had 53.

Gave our Father's Day presents to the fathers at the restaurant. Happy Father's Day, Darrell and Papa Dave! You do so much for your families.

Arrived at Parkwood campground in Statesboro, Georgia, around 2:30 PM! That gave us such a nice, whole afternoon to relax. Glad we didn't ride much longer into the afternoon, it was getting very hot to ride.

Things we did during our nice afternoon:
Played in the pool a lot: Jump/Dive/Ball, and Marco Polo with Doug and Rochelle. Just sat.
Ate delicious dinner of cranberry chicken, salad, rice, and cookies and watermelon for dessert.
Blogged. Showered. Chatted. Took walks. Played games.

Playing Logic and fanning away gnats

Pray for more nice days of riding - today was what family time is all about!

Tomorrow we are planning to wing it!

  1. Hey a shout out to my southern family. I was so inspired by your road kill stories that I went for a bike ride looking for road kill. I road 105 miles and still didn't find 42.

However just as one would expect the competition between the slow turtles and the equally slow possums was close all day. They ended up being tied at 5 each. Surprisingly the birds won with a total of 6. I have no idea why birds get killed crossing the road. Life is full of surprises.
I also counted 3 squirrels, 1 bull frog, 1 long 4' blacksnake, 1 water buffalo "bless his heart" and 1 groundhog. After Papa Dave sent me a text to look for armadillos I surely did, but I found none.

    Let the search continue tomorrow.
