Thank Yous

I am so grateful for my Dad and all his preparation to make this trip possible! This was the largest group he has led on a trip this long. He took care of prepping all our bikes before we left and kept them in working order on the way. He also understood the camper and figured out solutions to anything Lil wasn’t able to tackle.  The awning and the slide out didn’t always cooperate, and we clogged the toilet a few times. There were also a few tripped breakers and blown fuses. He made sure I had a charged battery every time I got on the e-bike. He lined up the bikes and locked them every night. Then each morning he had them lined up and ready to jump on and go. He also jumped in and helped Mom several times with laundry. He shouldered the weight of responsibility for the trip. I KNOW I don’t know half of what he did to make this trip happen. But I do know it was a true sacrifice of love for his family!

Eight years ago I was in Mom and Lil’s shoes, so I know that their role was actually more taxing than getting on the bike everyday and pedaling. Before the trip even began, Mom was preparing menus, making food, and packing supplies.

A typical day would start with the bikers leaving the campground in the morning and Mom and Lil set to work. They pulled in the awning, swept the mat, folded up the mat, flushed the black water, flushed the gray water, washed any dishes, swept the floor, pulled up the jacks, put away lawn chairs and the folding table, took out the garbage, pulled in the slide out, unhooked the electric and the plumbing, gathered anything we left behind, and made sure Dixie was in the RV. All this by 7 or 7:30 am. They would usually stop for ice, water, and more bananas before meeting us for breakfast. After breakfast they would locate a good place for a morning water refill or they kept going to find a good spot for lunch. They usually had the chairs and table out with food waiting when we pulled in. After lunch they would put it all away, clean the dishes, prep for supper, and call ahead to the campground pick for the evening. Often they would give us a water break in the afternoon. Upon our arrival at the campground, we’d usually find the slide out out, the welcome mat down, the lawn chairs in place, the hookups hooked up, the RV leveled, and supper in the roaster. But it didn’t end there. After supper was served and cleaned up, laundry was done and showers taken and suddenly it’s 9 or 10 or later. Somewhere in those busy days they also found time to have good conversations and keep encouraging us. Lil’s posters were a hit. We looked forward to what she would pull out each day. They also took lots of pics and notes to document our trip, filled the RV with gas, kept the frig stocked, and on 2 occasions picked us up at the end of a long day and returned us to our starting point the next morning. I know I speak for all of us when I say, “You are truly amazing!” Your sacrificial service made our ride possible. We are so grateful!

I in particular am so thankful to you, Dad, Mom, and Lil so I could participate in this trip as a rider. It means so much to me to have achieved this dream 2 years after my cancer diagnosis. I feel like this accomplishment is the beginning of the next season of my life, with cancer BEHIND me.

All thanks truly goes to God for His servants, His provision, and His protection!!

Bonus Material

Following are a few more notes and stories that didn’t get shared before ….

We had some rules starting out.
1. Eat before you’re hungry.
2. Drink before you’re thirsty.
3.. No one is allowed to be grumpy - and if you are, you have to ride 100 yards behind everyone else. ( No one ever had to ride 100 yards behind.  We did talk about all being grumpy together and then we would just all ride 100 yards behind together.)

Firsts:
We saw our first palm tree in NC.
We saw our first log truck in SC.
We saw our first turtle roadkill in Maryland.
We saw our first armadillo roadkill in SC.
We were first chased by dogs in NC.
Our first day with 60 miles before noon was Day 2, accomplishing that 3 more times.
Our first day we rode 100 miles in one day was day 7. David did the blog that evening and only gave us credit for 99 because that’s what his odometer read, but the rest of us had 100. We we’re just too tired to blog. 😊 We had 3 days total that we did 100 or more miles in one day.

Here are some more quotes that didn’t make the blog until now….
“ The bath house is 118 degrees and rising. “-Dave Nissley
“I thought this was a part time job.” - Lil / “That’s why I’m riding this time.”  -Ladina😊
“ The only time you can’t hear everything happening in the RV from one end to the other is when it’s pouring rain.” -Ladina
David looked 3 ways at a light that was taking too long to turn green. He took a left turn and then realized there had been a police officer behind him. “I should have looked 4 ways.”
“Will weathermen even go to heaven?” -Jenna
After passing a possum roadkill, Darrell said, “That possum is really good at playing possum; he even tricked the flies.”
After riding 30 + miles without seeing a restaurant for breakfast , Ellie piped up, “Where’s my breakfast!?”
“ I bet the fog is at least 50 SPF.”  - David
“Now I know why Zephyrhills is called Zephyrhills and not just Zephyr.”  -Jenna
“I don’t want this trip to be over.” -Darrell
“This campground wasn’t my first choice, because one of the reviews said it was a little  quirky. But we’re a little quirky, so I guess we can stay here.” - Ladina
Grandma got back from grocery shopping with 3 of the grandchildren and said, “That is the most fun I ever had grocery shopping.”

“ You know you are in … “
You know you are in NC when you see hog trucks and chicken trucks.
You know you are in SC when the rumble strips rattle your brain.
You know you are in Georgia when you see log trucks.
You know you are in Florida when there are plenty of RV parks. Now the challenge is just finding ones that aren’t 55+ communities and they don’t care that we are sleeping 8 or 9 people in a 10 person RV. 😊

Roadkills:
We counted roadkills everyday. (I told you we are quirky. ) David was rooting for the roadkill count  to be greater than the number of miles we rode. It never happened, but we came close one day. We saw 68 roadkills on a day we road 75 miles.

Some of the unusual roadkills we saw were …
a goose, rabbit, an extra dead possum - after I ran right over it’s still squishy body, fish?! - someone must have lost their whole cooler of catch for the day, a lizard, an owl, butterfly, mouse, frogs, fawn, and a fox.

We saw countless possum, turtle, and armadillo.

We also saw a few live animals - a fawn, snakes, turtles, and a wild hog.

I’ll close with this …
A Biker’s Blessing
May God give you dry roads, infrequent flat tires, wind on your back, nourishing meals and plenty of spring water, refreshing sleep, strong legs and a fit body, alert reflexes, guardian angels, pleasant scenery, companions by your side, an extrordinary support crew, hills to conquer, goals to achieve, a focused mind, fulfillment in each ride, and many miles to come.

Day 16- The Finish Line!

When mom woke up this morning at 5:20 it was raining. It was too dark to leave within the hour. She looked at the weather and figured we would ride out of the tropical depression if we started around 8. So everyone got to sleep in a little bit. Todays breakfast was in the camper cafe after mom and grandma went to Winn Dixie. They got 2 dozen eggs. Lil and Grandma made amazing whipped egg sandwiches but we couldn’t even eat them all. Jenna says David didn’t eat his fair share. Probably because we hadn’t ridden at all yet.

After breakfast we left at 8:15 and rode in the rain for less than a half hour, although the roads were wet for 1.5 hours. So we got pretty dirty. Jenna and Ellie and Emily decided to sing all the songs they could think of about sunshine so the sun would come out. It worked. If you want our playlist text us. We were riding on 301. Lots of stoplights. Some rough shoulders - amazing we didn’t have any flat tires today! We must have gotten them all out of our system yesterday. Ladina was the only one who didn’t get a flat on this trip. Well, Emily too, but that doesn’t really count. We had a REALLY nice tailwind! At one point we were cruising along at 15 mph up a hill with little effort. In fact, we made it 30 miles before the coop caught up to us. They pulled off at a church on the left so we could refill our water bottles. When we turned in Grandpa turned in front of a car for a close call but no contact. Thank you Lord!!! And thank you to everyone who has been praying for our safety on this trip. We are sure your prayers have protected us many times, and that includes today!

We made it to Deitweilers Fruit Farm by 1:15. We ate ice cream and drank orange juice and got our pictures taken and sat around and took a picture of a monster Beetle Bug. Then we ALL rode the last 3 miles to Aunt Janie’s house. It was Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt Janie, Lil, Dad, Mom, Emily, David, Jenna, and Ellie. We rode into Pinecraft at 2:15. We then had a photo shoot that lasted longer than David wanted and shorter than Grandma wanted. It was really nice that Grandpa’s friend Ivan was here to take videos of the bikers coming down the home stretch.

After setting up the motor home and getting cleaned up, we all went out to eat at Ford’s Garage, a past favorite. Great burgers and interesting bathrooms.

We are sitting around now guessing how many pounds of bananas, bags of ice, and gallons of water were purchased on this trip! There will be prizes!

…Aaaannnd the results are in! 55 gallons of water, Mom guessed 57. (If 55 seems low, that is because bikers sometimes stopped and bought their own water, and filled up at restaurants.) 30 bags of ice, and David guessed 32. Ellie was right on the money for bananas, guessing the correct answer of 25lbs. Jenna won closest guesses overall.

Stats:
64 miles
41 roadkill
Average of 14.6 for first 50 miles. 13.8 overall.
1240 total miles for the trip.

I’m sure Lil is happy she didn’t have to hear another campground employee’s incredulous “You have NINE people in ONE RV?!?!” for the umpteenth time!! She will be leaving tomorrow, which we are sad about, but her husband will be glad. We are excited that uncle Doug and cousin Avi are flying down to join us tonight!

Quote of the day was Lil’s last poster: “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”

Day 15 - Slow Start

I can’t believe this is our second to last day! Sore muscles are starting  to get used to riding bike and the heat is getting normal. I (Jenna) have had a great last couple days!

We set our this morning at 6:20. About 200 yards from the entrance to campground Ellie got another flat tire. It was her back tire, same as yesterday. The guys immediately began to get their stuff out and work on it. Fixing a flat usually doesn’t take long so me and Emily decided to keep riding, the rest would catch up to us soon. Well, soon turned into not so soon. Emily and I were 12 miles in when dad called and said that they were dealing with two more flat tires. Emily and I were way ahead! We slowed down and soon came to a free mattress that was sitting alongside the road. We stopped and had a nice nap. We didn’t nap but did take pictures and sent them to the others. I think they were jealous. We went 10 more miles and took a break at a gas station. We called dad again and learned that they had had a 4th flat and had only gone 5 miles. They stopped at a church and ate breakfast in the camper. Emily and I had 30 miles. So much for catching up soon. :) We stopped at a church and sat in the shade to wait. The camper caught up to us and we ate breakfast before the others caught up to us a little before 11. They had booked it! The rest of the day went very well. The weather was beautiful. Emily didn’t get too much more sun. We had wonderful green smoothies for lunch. It didn’t thunderstorm. The campground we’re at has the nicest pool we’ve had. Grandma cut up peaches and we had peaches and ice cream after dinner. We got in early so I’m anticipating going to bed soon!

Quotes of day: “You have to look both ways before you cross this RV. “ - Emily

“We’re happier than a tropical storm in an RV park.” - David

STATS

68 miles today. Average speed for the flat tire crew was 14.1 mph. Emily and I went slower.

Day 14

One of David’s tires was flat when we woke up this morning.

Ellie’s back tire went flat about 20 minutes after we left the campground in Starke.

Dad’s sunglasses broke.

We wound up on a dirt road that Google maps said would help us cut the angle. We decided to try it, but a gate was blocking it so we had to backtrack.

It was hot.

David’s derailer broke.

At first we thought the campground where we are staying tonight didn’t have showers, so Ladina rinsed off at the pool shower before we realized there really was a shower house!

The slide out on the RV wouldn’t come out so Grandpa had to push it.

I got sunburned even though I put sunscreen on twice!

With a list like this, you would think we had a bad day. It wasn’t easy, but it was a great day! We are just so thankful to all be together! We are thankful we get to do something like this!

As I was riding behind Jenna and Ellie this morning, pride surged up in me. “Wow, look at these pros! Look how far they have come!” It is hard to believe this trip is already almost over!

Highlights of the day included a great breakfast at PJ’s, little wind, blue skies with puffy clouds, a beautiful shaded spot for lunch, Grandma and Lil’s 5-star service, riding past some beautiful horse ranches, wildflowers, and the cold pool at the end of the day.

Day 13

The first thing that happened this morning was Emily left our house at 3am and started her drive down to meet up with us. Meanwhile yesterday we had decided to leave at 6:15 because the farther we go South the later the sun comes up. But we ended up leaving at 6:25. We road 22 miles to breakfast at Okeefenokee Restaurant. David got two omelettes. We had a really nice waitress and really good food. Left the restaurant at 9:30 and road 38 more miles to the FL state line! At onetime we went over some train tracks and right after we passed the bars went down and the train was coming! The last mile to the state line we all raced. David was in first and dad was in second I (Ellie) was third grandpa was fourth and Jenna was fifth (mom didn’t race.) Grandma and Lil got us all Orange juice. Then we all ate lunch and left for the last 30 miles to the campground. Got to the campground at 4:45. We immediately put our swimsuits on and went swimming at the pool. Emily got here soon after 6:00 and we all ate and then went swimming again! We played water baseball.

Stats

98 miles, average speed 13.3, not much wind. We hit 1000 miles total for the trip! That means we have around 250 to go.

Day 12 - Enjoying Southern Accents

Stats: 102 miles, 14.1 average, 64 miles by noon

We benefited from southern hospitality again today. Our cousin/niece/sister-in-law, Bethany Nissley is from Jesup, Georgia. Our route took us right through Jesup today and so we lined up to meet some of her family at a park. They provided us with drinks, veggies, fruit, chips, and homemade ice-cream. Chad and Bethany provided subs from Jersey Mikes. They must have thought there were 40 of us, because there was so much food leftover. 😊 I know Bethany was wishing she could have joined us. We would have loved for her to be here too!

We started off again this morning at 6:01 from Statesboro, Georgia on 301S. We rode with lights since there was some fog and the sun doesn’t rise until closer to 6:30 down here. Eighteen miles later we stopped in Claxton, Georgia at a Huddle House for breakfast. We enjoyed our waitress who was definitely not on her first day of the job.

We have been enjoying reactions of folks we meet when they find out what we are doing. Our waitress today did not disappoint, as her jaw dropped to the ground. Then as we were leaving another patron asked about our adventure. He offered us his advice, “Ya’ll need to go to a liquor store and get you a piiint.” We laughed about that for awhile. 😊

Lil called ahead to our campground tonight. The owner answered in her sweet and strong southern accent. And Lil was told to come on in and pick our site. “We ain’t got but twelve sites.” (You have to read this again with that strong southern accent to appreciate why Lil was chuckling as she hung up the phone.) We are at Mutt’s Place RV Park south of Nahunta, Georgia. Needless to say, they never asked about a rabies vaccine for Dixie.  No pool, but other than that this place is great - full hookup, nice bathhouse, free washer, no gnats or sand or dust.

We dodged most of the rain today until we got showered on for about 15 minutes when we were about 10 miles from our campground. But by the time we pulled in we were pretty much air dried.

Some observations I’ve made on this trip include…

• As we travel further south, the corn is getting taller,  the wheat is getting riper and the gas is getting cheaper.

• We are keeping track of unique road names. There’s some that none of us want to go down, such as Colon Ave, Bear Trap Road, Panther Creek Road, Tic Bite Road, and Dusty Bottom Road. Then there are a few inviting names such as Peach Basket Road, Magnolia Drive, Pleasant Home Road, and the one we all wanted to take was Shortcut Lane.😊

• There are no perfect days - biking or any other time. But we sure have had quite a few “ideal” days - getting 60+ miles in before noon, tailwinds, good food and lots of laughs.

• We have become church hoppers. We ate lunch at a Baptist church, the next day at a Presbyterian Church, the next day at a Baptist church and we have also stopped at a Methodist Church.😊
